A Day in the Life: KDI Interior Designer

Last month, we gave you a behind-the-scenes look into the world of a Project Coordinator. This month, we’re shifting our focus to the creative side. Join us as we spend the day following along one of our Interior Designers.

Morning Kick-Off:

Before I do anything, I always have to create a to-do list for the day. I’m a visual person, so I’m big into blocking out time on my calendar for specific projects so I can visually see an outline for my day. I also like to create a more in-depth to-do list on a piece of paper, because there is nothing better than getting to cross off a task no matter how big or small. I tend to take a slower, more deliberate approach to my mornings. This usually involves reviewing any quotes, submittals or drawings from the previous day. This quieter start to my day sets a steady pace and allows for a focused and organized start.

Morning Grind:

Now that my organizational prep is done, I have a solid foundation to dive into my creative tasks for the day. This is when I like to tackle any drawing related tasks, because I feel most creative. On this particular day, I was space planning for a new corporate project. This is where I get to be a creative problem-solver ensuring the footprint is efficiently laid out in a way that optimizes functionality, flexibility and aesthetics.

Mid-Day Moments:

Next, I head out for a site visit for a project that’s nearing completion. This is a crucial time to get on site as it’s the final opportunity to review and address any last-minute details. Here I carefully inspect the space, focusing on the placement and condition of furniture as well as any interior finishes that may need attention. This stage requires lots of plan checking and coordination with installers, GC’s and our project coordinator. There’s lots of moving parts, but it’s one of the more rewarding phases of the project. After months (and sometimes years!), all the hard work, collaboration and team efforts that went into a project finally start to come to life.

Afternoon Hustle:

Back at the office, I wrap up my day by creating presentation materials for an upcoming client meeting. These presentation materials usually consist of floor plans, furniture + finish selections, 3D renderings and elevations. Renderings are a critical aspect of the design process as it provides clients with a detailed visualization of their future space. They not only help aid future design related decisions but act as a double check for the designer to ensure confidence in the selections.

That’s a Wrap:

A day in the life of an Interior Designer is a blend of creative + technical thinking, organization and collaboration. Every day brings its own unique challenges and opportunities to bring spaces to life through meaningful ways.
