Back to School: A PC Perspective

Updated: Sep 11

It’s “Back to School” season and as a parent, it involves a lot of planning, organization and scheduling, much like a Project Coordinator!

It’s important to start the school year with a set of goals, like a PC is starting a project.

·         Academic Goals

·         Sports, clubs, after school job

·         Time with friends

·         Family – dinners, night time routine, homework, before and after school care

By prioritizing at the beginning of the school year, it’s a lot like the planning stage a Project Coordinator goes through when meeting with clients at the start of a project.

Creating a timeline/time management, like planning a project, with deadlines, events, important moments will keep you on track throughout the year and prevent “surprises”. Apply the same time management in project management.

Stay organized regarding school supplies, PE uniforms, chrome books and chargers, dorm room set up. Like the preparation phase in project management with creating purchasing orders.

Communication is important. Sharing calendars, meeting invites, emails. This keeps everyone “in the loop” of what is coming up. This is key in project management.

Sometimes, circumstances change so it’s important to be flexible and prepared. If mistakes happen, learn from them and move on. Share what you learned from these mistakes.

Whether it’s the start of the school year or the start of a project, these points can be a checklist for your project team and/or family for a successful, organized year ahead.
